MESSAGE NOTES:
“A New You: SALT & LIGHT”
Series, “Good to Great,” Message 3”
Mike McDaniel, Lead Pastor
Matthew 5:13-16
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Oh how wonderful, oh how marvelous-the song I need when I need encouragement
Short definition of greatness:
Greatness is an inside work that is seen and experienced on the outside.
Long definition of greatness:
Greatness is me becoming a bit more like Jesus everyday, so much so that those closest to me see Jesus in me and experience Jesus through me.
Outline of the Beatitudes:
INTRODUCTION Matthew 5:2-16
MAIN BODY Matthew 5:17-7:23
CONCLUSION Matthew 7:24-29
Two assessments others should have of me
1) Experiential: am I salty for Jesus?
Salt is experienced:
a. in a covenant relationship with Jesus
b. as a preservative
c. by bringing flavor to others
Job 6:6
Luke 14:34
What to be salt to the world?-Go back to the Beatitudes and go to the Fruit of the Spirit.
Salt is a stable compound.
But if you mix it with other things of the world it will become diluted.
1 John 2:15-16
We lose the flavor to bring to the world.
Romans 12:2
-diluted
-compromise
2) seeing: am I illuminating Jesus?
What does light do?
a. Light dispels darkness.
b. Light illumines truth.
c. Light points people to Jesus.
Proverbs 4:18
Eph. 5:9
Matthew 5:16
Salt can’t become saltless and light can’t be dark.
